The arabian al-faras or horseman corresponds to the knight in modern chess and also moves in the same way. In early arabian chess the knight is one of the most powerful and valuable pieces in the game, even more so since elephant (today's bishop) and vizier (today's queen) don't yet enjoy the great mobility they have in modern chess.
